The U.S.-India Business Council expressed concern about a recent decision by the Supreme Court of India, which denied a patent on Glivec, a cancer medication produced by pharmaceutical company Novartis. The court's decision cites Section 3 (d) of India's patent law and states that a patentee must prove enhanced efficacy of a medicine in order to obtain a patent in India.

SunCoke Energy Inc. and VISA Steel Ltd. have launched a cokemaking joint venture in India. The new joint venture will be called VISA SunCoke Limited. SunCoke Energy holds a 49 percent interest in the joint venture, with VISA Steel holding the remaining 51 percent. SunCoke has invested approximately $67 million to acquire a 49 percent stake in the joint venture.

Symphony Teleca Corp., a services organization that helps clients manage the global convergence of software, electronics, the cloud and connected devices, said that TT Electronics has selected the company to set up an engineering center for product engineering services. The partnership is marked by the formation of a dedicated engineering offshore development center that boasts highly skilled designers and engineers who will provide a strategic global delivery solution for TT electronics’ customers, the company said.

Indiana University has announced the creation of its first international gateway office. Located in Gurgaon, India, the Indiana University Gateway-India will serve as a home base for IU activities in the country. Dombivli Nagari Sahakari Bank, the first cooperative bank to launch mobile banking services in India, has selected IBM PureSystems to provide financial services. The new IBM PureFlex System integrates the bank’s hardware, cloud capabilities, network management and virtualization, allowing DNS Bank to expand its reach, gain new clients and reduce operational expenses by 10 percent — without increasing its IT infrastructure footprint, the company said.

Tata Starbucks Ltd., the 50/50 joint venture between Starbucks Coffee Co. and Tata Global Beverages Ltd., opened the doors to the first three Starbucks stores in India — all three are located in Mumbai. The company called it "the beginning of the iconic brand's India journey."

New York's Turner Construction Co., London's Acropolis Capital Group and India's Sahara Prime City Ltd. joins forces in Sahara Turner Construction Ltd. and plan to develop and construct multiple townships across India to the tune of $2.5 billion over the next five years. The partnership will be managed by Turner and the company will provide construction services and lead in the development of townships. Turner also said that, over time, it will serve clients in other markets such as infrastructure, health care and hospitality.

The U.S.-India Business Council applauded the Indian Parliament’s passage of allowing 51 percent foreign direct investment in the country’s multi-brand retail sector. The new law will usher in much needed investments and expertise into supply chain development that can more efficiently link farmers directly to markets, thus minimizing loss due to inadequate storage and transportation facilities, the organization stated.

The Germantown, Md.-based Hughes Network Systems LLC has been contracted to connect 27,000 ATMs in India with a secure broadband satellite network over the next two years and provide managed network services for various public sector banks in a deal valued at approximately $36 million. Hughes subsidiary Hughes Communications India Ltd. will handle the work, which includes contracts with eight managed service providers: Accura Infotech, AGS Transact Technologies, EPS, FIS Global, Financial Software and Systems, MphasiS, NCR and Tata Communications Banking Infra Solutions.

The San Jose, Calif.-based Polycom Inc., an open standards-based unified communications and collaboration company, has announced a deal with Bajaj Group for its RealPresence video solutions. Bajaj Group is using RealPresence to streamline its operations, reduce costs and enhance collaboration between the company's corporate headquarters in Mumbai and Noida, its group companies, and six power plants, operated by the Energy division, in remote locations across India, the company said.
